What Is a Havanese?
The Havanese is a breed of dog that was bred to be a companion dog for the wealthy, rather than being bred for a purpose like working class dogs are.
They are a toy breed and typically only grow to be between 8 ½ to 11 ½ inches high at the shoulder, and between 7 to 13 pounds in weight. This means that the breed is easy to pick up and can sit on your lap— they are also easy to travel with! Havanese are popular for their long, silky hair and expressive dark eyes. The breed is often said to look like sweet little stuffed animals!

Havanese Breed History
The Havanese is descended from the Blanquito, which is a dog breed that was first brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers in the 1500s. The Blanquito was bred with dogs from the Bichon family, like the Poodle and Bichon Frise, which resulted in the Havanese.
They became popular with the wealthy families of Cuba as companion dogs. Then, during the Cuban Revolution, many of these families brought their dogs with them when they fled to the United States. This helped to introduce the breed to a new market and set up a breeding program in the states.

Sable
Sable is one of the possible colors that your Havanese could come in. Sable is more of a pattern, as it can come in many colors, such as silver sable, chocolate sable, or red sable. Sable is usually paired with white. It is a bicolored type of coat variation. This is a color that does often change as the breed gets older, though, which is important to take note of!
Black
Another common color of Havanese dog is black. A black Havanese will have a dark, glossy coat without hints or red or brown. If your Havanese does have hints of red and brown in their coat, then it is not considered to have a pure black coat. A pure black coat will not change as your dog ages. Bicolored dogs may be black with white, tan, silver, or brindle. Black Havanese are some of the most common and most popular breeds of Havanese, too.
Red Havanese
The red Havanese usually have orange to deep reddish coats. Sometimes, they may also have patches of light brown and white, or the tips of their coats can be a brighter or darker red than the rest of their coat.
Silver Havanese
The silver Havanese has a coat that can range from soft gray to a darker, smoky color. They are born with dark hair at first, which will then lighten as they grow older.
Some of the silver Havanese’s hair will stay dark after the puppy is fully grown. There may be some white patches present in your Havanese coat as well.

However, you could also have a rare case of a puppy that stays the same color its whole life, as this is uncommon but can happen in some cases, too!
What is a parti colored Havanese?
A party colored Havanese refers to a Havanese dog that carries the ticking gene. This is where the dog has a white coat with flicks of color throughout the coat.
This gives the dog a bit of a salt-and-pepper appearance! The flecks of color, or the ticking, only appear in the white area of the coat. If your dog does not have the ticking gene, then their coat will be white and will stay crisp and pure. A parti-colored Havanese can also be called a Parti Belton Havanese.
Can a black Havanese turn brown?
The color your Havanese dog is when it is a puppy is usually not the color it will be for its entire life! There are some other breeds of dog that this happens to, as well.
Often, a Havanese can darken or lighten in color as they mature. It is difficult to know what to expect with each individual dog, as this of course comes down to genetics in the end.
If you have a black Havanese puppy, for example, it is entirely possible that it will turn brown as it grows older. However, it is hard to say whether or not it will happen for sure.
