Havanese Breed History

It may seem as if the Havanese breed popped up out of nowhere, but that is simply not true! The breed actually has a long history. This history dates back to the 1500s, when Spanish settlers brought the ancestors of the Havanese to Cuba.

These ancestors, the Blanquito dog, were then bred with dogs from the Bichon family in order to create a new breed. The resulting litters were Havanese puppies! After many stages of selective breeding, they reached the end result that we know today when we think of the Havanese breed standard.

The Havanese became popular in Cuba, especially among the wealthy and elite. In fact, the Havanese was, and is still, Cuba’s national dog. Their influence did not spread much wider until the Cuban Revolution, though.

During this time, when wealthy families fled Cuba for America, many took their dogs with them. This helped to introduce the breed to Americans, and soon a demand for this breed arose. American breeders set up a breeding program with the Havanese that had immigrated from Cuba, and the rest is history! These days, the Havanese breed is very popular all across North America.
