How Do I find a Reputable Breeder in my Area?
Kennel Clubs and Associations
This is a really good question and one that people need to ask. There are too many bad breeders out there, puppy mills and other gross things that we don’t even want to really talk about.
One of the first things you should do is find out if the breeder is listed with any of the kennel clubs, or associations in the area.
This isn’t always a sign of a reputable breeder but it is a good starting point. Sometimes people don’t like associations because the association believes something contrary to the beliefs of the breeder, like boxers and ears. This is something that you will need to research and find out for your self.
Just because they are an association, doesn’t mean that they are right. You definitely want to find a someone whos breeding program concentrates on quality dogs and breed standards.

Former Clients
Go on a search for former clients of the breeder. Sometimes they will have them listed on their website, other times you will have to do a little digging. If it is a reputable breeder that has nothing to hide then ask them for the names of a few people that have bought puppies from them, they will give them to you. Ask some questions.
Small Animal Vets in the Area
You can always phone around and ask the local vets. They can’t give you personal information about a breeder, but they will definitely be able to tell you if they know that the breeder is reputable or if they have heard of any puppy mills in the area.
Visit Local Dog Shows
Dog shows are a very interesting thing, and if you have never been to one they are quite a trip. However, if you are looking for a good breederwith show quality dogs in the area, all of the reputable breeders will be at the dog show. This is because they are trying to win points for their breeding stock and raise the value of their puppies. You will be able to walk around and visit with them and get a sense of who they are and if you want to get a puppy from them.
